“…what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.” -2 Timothy 2:2
Let’s face it, fellow Christian business leaders: if we were only responsible for raising profits, life would be simpler. But God, in His infinite wisdom (and perhaps His divine sense of humor), has called us to raise up leaders too. It’s like He’s saying, “Hey, running a successful business isn’t challenging enough. Let’s add mentoring to the mix!”
Now, before you start questioning if this task is tougher than explaining the Trinity or resisting donuts at a church potluck, let’s dive into why it’s so crucial.
Scripture is pretty clear about leadership development. In 2 Timothy 2:2, Paul tells Timothy to entrust his teachings to reliable people who can teach others. It’s like a holy game of telephone, minus the miscommunication. And let’s not forget Proverbs 27:17: “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Though, personally, I find coffee more effective for sharpening my mind in the morning!
Jesus, the ultimate leader, showed us how it’s done. He lived with His disciples, teaching them through words and actions. After washing their feet, He said, “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you” (John 13:15). Note: This doesn’t mean you should start a foot-washing service in your office. HR might have questions.
So, how can we raise up leaders without raising our blood pressure? Here are some ideas:
1. Mentorship programs: Because everyone needs someone to blame their gray hairs on.
2. Leadership training: Teach them to fish… or at least to read spreadsheets.
3. Delegating responsibility: Let them make mistakes. It’s character-building (and sometimes hilarious).
4. Modeling integrity: Demonstrate Christ-like character in all business dealings.
5. Encouraging spiritual growth: Prove that praying is more effective than panicking.
Remember Ephesians 2:10: “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works.” You’re not just a boss; you’re a masterpiece with a mission!
Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Between balancing books and balancing family life, where do I find time for this?” Well, consider it an investment. You’re not just shaping careers; you’re molding kingdom-builders. Plus, let’s be honest, it’s nice to have someone to delegate your least favorite tasks to.
Challenge for the week:
Find a potential leader in your ranks. Spend 30 minutes with them sharing your wisdom. Warning: This may involve admitting you don’t have all the answers, which could be shocking for all involved.
As Psalm 78:4 encourages us to tell the next generation about God’s deeds, remember: your leadership journey, complete with its face-palm moments and victories, is part of that story.
So, let’s embrace this calling with the enthusiasm of a worship band drummer and the purpose of a pastor on pizza night. We’re not just building businesses; we’re advancing God’s kingdom. And who knows? The leader you raise today might be the one who keeps you from making a colossal mistake tomorrow. Now that’s what I call a return on investment!
Think and Pray: Who is it in your circle of influence that you can start to be more intentional to help develop? Father, help me this week to purposefully live in a way that helps others be lifted up in Jesus’ name, amen.
