“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I
have commanded you.“ Matthew 28:19–20
My earliest understanding of the discipleship process came from the church of my
youth. Discipleship was a class held on Sunday nights. By attending the class, I
understood that I was now part of those who had been “discipled”.
However, once I began to uncover in the Bible what Jesus meant when He spoke of
being a disciple, it had nothing to do with a class or program. Never once did I see
Jesus going to a class in his local synagogue for six weeks every Sunday night. When I
saw what Jesus did, the word disciple changed its meaning from being a verb
(something you do) to being a noun (something you become). It became less about
ticking boxes and attending a class to living intentionally and sharing my life with
another. The whole purpose of discipleship became to help others see Jesus by
sharing my life with them.
Now that I’m older and questionably wiser, I believe what Jesus modeled was modern
day mentorship. I believe in the power of one-on-one spiritual mentorship so much that I
have lived my adult life in pursuit of seeing others embrace their God-given
responsibility to make Him known by investing their lives through one-on-one mentoring.
Why? Mentoring from a biblical perspective changes lives. I am a product of just one
woman seeing her responsibility to make a disciple. Overtime, my mentor helped me
grasp a deeper understanding of who I was and how I fit into God’s plan.
Do you desire to see God use you in someone’s life in the same way God used my mentor?
Consider this your personal invitation to discover the potential for gaining tools designed to help
you get started on the journey of mentorship. I challenge you to embark on this journey with
others ready to invest in helping someone grow in their relationship with Christ, and experience
the spiritual growth in your own life!
Think and Pray: We are living in days like never before. What if now was the time to get serious about Jesus’ command to make disciples? When mentoring relationships flourish, true discipleship
happens. Come discover how mentoring can become practical, personal, meaningful and
effective. Lord, please bring to my heart one person in my life that I can be praying for and actively sharing Christ with this week, in Your Holy name, Amen.
