LET THAT THANG GO

In T-Bone's song "Let That Thang Go," the message is clear: we need to let go of the things that weigh us down. As Christians, one of the most significant burdens we carry is the weight of our sins. However, we don't have to keep them. Jesus offers us a way to let go and find freedom through faith.

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith." - Hebrews 12:1-2a (NIV)

The journey of faith is often described as a race, with obstacles, challenges and countless distractions as we ‘run’. Sin can entangle us, slowing our progress and weighing us down. But Hebrews 12:1-2 reminds us that we have a cloud of witnesses cheering us on, urging us to throw off these hindrances and fix our eyes on Jesus.

Jesus is the ultimate example of letting go. He carried the weight of our sins to the cross, offering us forgiveness and redemption. Through his sacrifice, we have the power to let go of our past mistakes and embrace a new life in him.

How to let go and rely on Jesus?

  1. Philippians 3:13-14 encourages us to forget what is behind and strain toward what is ahead, pressing on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called us heavenward in Christ Jesus.
  2. 1 Peter 5:7 reminds us to cast all our anxiety on Him because He cares for us.
  3. Matthew 11:28-30 invites us to come to Jesus, all who are weary and burdened, and He will give us rest.

Letting go isn't always easy, but it's essential for our spiritual growth and freedom. As we give our sins to Jesus, we experience the peace and joy that come from knowing we are forgiven and loved. So let's heed the call of T-Bone's song and "let that thang go," trusting in Jesus to guide us on the path to true freedom.

Think and pray
Our intentions are usually good - have a daily devotional time, pray more, don't bring work home with us, create margin in our work week, etc. But what are the things that prevent us from doing this consistently? What pressures and expectations seem to always get in the way?

Lord, there doesn't seem to be enough time to do everything that I need to do. My various responsibilities have kept me from spending the time with You that I know I need. Help me to identify and remove the distractions that keep me from seeking You first. Take those from me and give me Your rest. Amen.
