Allyship: the status or role of a person who advocates and actively works for the inclusion of a marginalized group in all areas of society, not as a member of that group but in solidarity with its struggle and point of view and under its leadership; the relationship or status of persons or groups associating and cooperating with one another for a common cause or purpose
Jesus is for marginalized people. Throughout the gospels, Jesus purses people on the outside, actively working to include them. From women to people with disabilities to social outcasts, Jesus didn’t just see marginalized people; he invited them in. And this month, we’re focusing on how we can do the same.
Is there someone at work that you can advocate for? What would it look like for you to find a male ally – someone who supports, advocates for, and includes you? Is there anyone in your sphere who doesn’t have a seat at the table?
When it comes to our work, research shows that women face an obstacle called the “broken rung,” which keeps women from advancing into senior leadership positions. For every 100 men promoted from entry-level to manager, only 87 women are promoted (Source: McKinsey & Company). A primary way to remediate the problem of the broken rung is allyship. We need one another to pull each other up and in. What would it look like for you to take time this month to consider how you can practice allyship as an embodiment of your faith, specifically at work?
Join us this month as we focus on allyship – what it is, what it means for us as Christian women, and how we can practice the way of Jesus by living as allies to one another – especially including those on the margins.
